The Art of Mobilization
We are convinced that in many organizations, consciously or unconsciously, people's hearts (red) are unaffected and, therefore, principally good strategies and change programs are less successful than management expects. Cognition and knowledge (blue) get all the attention. Blueprints, roll-outs, milestones. Often top-down, based on best practices and expert opinion. Of course, improving the rational elements of management, starting with Taylor's Scientific Management late 19th century, achieved an awful lot. But the balance between red and blue is too much disturbed.
Lack of motivation, alienation, resistance, in short: negative human behavior, usually not due to lack of rational insight and understanding, determine increasingly frequent and unruly the limits of feasibility. More methods and techniques, even those focusing on cultural change, are generally unable to remedy these limitations. Next to convincing people of our strategy we will have to win their hearts. The art of this can be recognized in aligning these goals: heart and mind, feelings and reason, red and blue: our art!
